Teaching Philosophy
I believe that music is one of the most powerful and unifying forces in our world, not only to connect people and communities, but to connect learners of music with themselves—to realize their own incredible creativity and potential. My mission is to guide students of all ages and levels to build well-rounded and refined foundations in their musical training, rooted in an approach that fosters skills for effective and independent learning so each student can attain excellence, no matter their goals or purpose for piano studies. I believe that the most effective and sustainable method to achieving a high level of artistry is to do so through a student-centered approach that nurtures physical, mental, and emotional well-being: one that builds the confidence and resilience necessary for continued progress. As an educator, I seek to accomplish this through strategies rooted in kindness, compassion and constructive goal setting, utilizing methodologies based in up-to-date findings from pedagogical research.
My teaching curriculum aims to develop pianists and musicians prepared for the diversified demands and practices of the music world today. This is achieved through a comprehensive approach that centers a “core” curriculum of well-respected methods, a robust solo repertoire focused on standard works, and consistent performance training through studio recitals, exams and competitions. This approach becomes well-rounded through incorporating aural, reading and sightreading skills, study of music theory and music history, and exploration of keyboard skills and genres such as improvisation, collaborative piano and chamber music, composition, jazz and other popular styles.
I seek to train creative, empathetic and excellent musicians with the tools and motivation to make music for a lifetime. Creating constructive and inspiring experiences for students is at the core of my teaching philosophy.
